John was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2007 on the Mid Scotland and Fife regional list.

Born in Dunfermline, John has lived in Fife for most of his life and started his career as an apprentice electrical fitter at Rosyth , where he became an active trade unionist.

John has also worked as a trade union convener at the dockyard, before moving onto positions with Amicus, Babcock Naval Services and most recently the Scottish Trades Union Congress.

Married with two children, John has a number of interests, including playing five a side football, film and music and enjoys spending his spare time with his family.

John’s committee and working group responsibilities in the Scottish Parliament include;

  • Cross Party Group on Sport

  • Cross Party Group on Economy

  • Cross Party Group on Construction

  • Cross Party Group on Oil and Gas

A member of the trade union, Unite (Amicus Section), John is also secretary to the Unite (Amicus) MSP group.
