Never in its history so far has this Constituency been able to return a Labour MP. However there is no doubt that the contribution of this Party and this Constituency to the Labour movement has been very significant indeed. North East Fife has given opportunity and first class training to aspiring Labour candidates who have gone on to make their mark in Parliament and public life.
Why this constituency should provide such a good experience for a candidate has been the subject of much speculation. We would suggest that one logical explanation lies in the sheer diversity of the constituency. A candidate in North East Fife will gain experience of dealing with subjects such as Universities; Fishing; Agriculture; Defence; Manufacturing; Transport; Tourism; Electronics.
These are all issues with an important political dimension and a number of previous candidates will acknowledge that experience gained in this constituency was a great asset in their future career.
