George Izatt — Provost, Dunfermline Town Council

Although Izatt Avenue is well known as a street and district name in Dunfermline, it is probable that only a few know who it is named after. George Izatt OBE, JP was appointed Provost of Dunfermline in 1945 but died in office in January 1948.

He had been born in 1874 in Townhill, where he worked as a miner and for many years he was a Townhill Committee member if the miners’ Union and was victimized for his beliefs and actions. However, his greatest passion was for education and as far back as 1909 he was elected to the Parish School Board. When the Boards amalgamated into the
Fife County Education Committee he was nominated as one of the Dunfermline representatives.

He was elected its Convener in 1937 and continued to serve until his death. His driving aim was to provide for the young the opportunities not available to him in his youth. He became Deputy Chairman of Fife County Council and was also active in many other organization e.g. as a Town Councillor, a County JP from 1914, Chairman of Townhill Industrial Cooperative Society for over 30 years.
