Glenrothes Labour Party

A Labour Party Branch was formed early on in the life of the new town the catalyst was the arrival of a young twenty six year old, Alan McLure from Glasgow. This was in 1952 and at that time the town’s population was relatively small and they were part of the West Fife Constituency.

Alan was elected to Fife County Council in 1955 so began the long struggle to create a new town with the housing, social and economic infrastructure that we know today. While Alan McLure earned the title Mr. Glenrothes it must also be recognized that the roll of many of his Labour colleagues were essential to his success and the key decisions that were taken to secure a future for Glenrothes. People such as Alex Devlin, Bob King, Elizabeth Henderson, Sir George Sharp and many other Labour councilors and community activist all played their part in creating a community that has contributed so much to Fife.
